Metallurgist Engineer - Lab Lead

Lead the HPG Metallurgical Lab in Mason, Ohio

Create a “state of the art" Metallurgical Lab environment

As Metallurgical Engineer – Lab Lead you will report to the Engineering/Quality Manager and will lead the Metallurgical Lab team to ensure proper lab techniques are followed.  You will conduct routine and non-routine metallurgical testing and failure analysis meeting turn-around times and adhering to the Corporate Quality System and applicable test methods and document control requirements.  You will authorize certificates of compliance’ controlling the shaping of metals through casting, extrusion, drawing;  cutting and spooling operations ensuring production schedules are met.  You will lend your knowledge and experience in new product development, enhancing standard work processes in the lab and on the manufacturing floor. You will be a liaison between Customers, Suppliers, Contractors, Plant and Corporate providing coordination and cooperation along with your team to ensure tests and projects are completed on time while minimizing disruption to current plant production requirements.  You will be responsible for developing and completing reports, specifications, procedures, and quality documentation and communicating to customers/suppliers and the HPG team, compliance to quality procedures, troubleshooting metal fabrication manufacturing processes, and attainment of cost reduction objectives.  Responsibilities also include:

  • Working safely and supporting safety within the team across the organization
  • Resolving/escalating issues in a timely fashion
  • Reporting on process trends to plant operations and Engineering and Quality Manager
  • Training laboratory personnel as needed
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment to run efficiently and accurately
  • Continually upgrading metallurgical lab capabilities through new technologies and training
  • Using Lean Six Sigma tools and processes to incorporate and enhance the quality departments deliverables
  • Minimizing HPG’s exposure and risk on product liability 
  • Ensuring that all lab documentation is completed and updated in a timely manner
  • Developing long term relationships with Suppliers and Customers
  • Benchmarking, communicating, and implementing best practices into the lab 
  • Running and coordinating multiple cost savings and benchmarking projects within budget and on time
  • Working with the Engineering and Manufacturing Team to add knowledge and expertise to ensure manufacturing processes are meeting specifications and customer standards.
  • Motivating the team to work together; mitigating team conflict and communication problems
  • Providing input on performance of laboratory team

 Requirements

•Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering from a four-year college or university
•5-7 years lead experience in a metallurgical laboratory
•Experience with non-ferrous metals and alloys in a metals casting and fabrication manufacturing environment preferred
•Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
•Ability to write reports and procedure manuals
•Providing detailed statistical analysis using Six Sigma tools 
•Designing and executing DOE, Measurement Analysis and FMEA’s
•Ability to relate well to people at all levels and work effectively individually as well as within a team
•Understanding ISO 9001, ASTM, CA and other applicable requirements
•Understanding of all methods of casting, extrusion, drawing; cutting and spooling operations
•SAP experience an plus
•Implementation of Lean/Six Sigma manufacturing programs
