The Harris Products Group receives environmental health and safety award

Mason, OH – The Harris Products Group’s Mason facility recently received the 2011 Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Chairman’s Award from their parent company, Lincoln Electric, for maintaining an exceptionally safe and environmentally conscious manufacturing environment.

Lincoln Electric selected Harris, a manufacturer of brazing, soldering, welding and cutting equipment and alloys, for exceeding its EHS goals. It also recognized Harris for additional accomplishments including an overall reduction of energy usage and hazardous waste, expansion of the facility’s recycling program and implementation of water pre-treatment systems.

“Without a doubt, our top priority is the safety of our employees and visitors and minimizing our impact on the environment,” said Steve Vigil, Environmental Health and Safety Manager for the Harris Products Group. “This recognition means a lot to our team. Every employee works incredibly hard to perform in a manner that emphasizes the highest level of safety. And with a deep respect for the environment, our teams are always pursuing ways to be more environmentally friendly.”

Facilities around the world within the Lincoln Electric Company were evaluated based on their DART (Days Away From Work, Restricting or Transfer) and TRC (Total Reportable Cases) rate, environmental impact, recycling rate, energy consumption and other factors. Lincoln Electric Chairman’s Awards are given to facilities with exceptional records in these areas.

With a DART rate of 1.06 in 2011, Harris Mason was significantly lower than their goal of 2.0, lower than the company average and the national average for its segment of the industry. Overall, the Mason facility has consistently surpassed corporate health and safety goals by 25%.

Additionally, the Harris Products Group Mason headquarters and all Harris manufacturing facilities –Gainesville, Ga.; São Paulo, Brazil and Dzierżoniów, Poland – have earned ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Management, implementing systems for environmental quality and improvement.

“We are very proud of this team and their proactive, employee-driven programs,” said David Nangle, president of The Harris Products Group. “They have continuously set and met aggressive goals that enable the entire company to exceed expectations year after year.”

Nangle said he is pleased with Harris’ consistent performance in these EH&S ratings. The company’s Poland facility earned the inaugural Chairman’s Award for 2010, and the Gainesville, Ga., facility ranked high amongst all facilities in Lincoln Electric for the 2011 award evaluation.
