INDUSTRIAL REGULATORS VERSUS HIGH PURITY REGULATORS

What makes a specialty gas regulator special?

Specialty gas regulators, sometimes referred to as “spec gas regulators” or “lab regulators,” are designed so that no contaminates are introduced into the gas stream during service. Harris’ specialty gas high purity regulators have diffusion-resistant stainless steel diaphragms and chemically inactive PTFE or PCTFE seats. All other elastomers are PTFE as well. A high leak integrity is also important so that purging or vacuum systems do not introduce atmospheric contaminates during use. Low internal volume, barstock materials and smooth internal surface finishes ensure no contaminates remain inside, if purged or evacuated. Venting is a CGA requirement. Some models use dangerous gases that require remote ventilation to a safe area.

Understanding the factors

Compressed gas regulators, when not performing optimally, can lead to many hazardous situations, including leakage of toxic, pyrophoric or asphyxiate gases into the atmosphere and/or the risk of explosion or fire. The use of regulators should be limited to persons properly trained and experienced with the use of such device, and who are aware of the inherent dangers associated with them. Applications for compressed gas regulators are so numerous, thus the life expectancy is varied and proportional to the gas service and the environment in which the device is used.
